The registration exercise for Kenyans in diaspora in preparation for the 2017 General Elections will start March next year, the Kenyan ambassadour to Washington, DC has said.
Ambassador Robinson Githae alluded that the Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Mr. Issack Hassan had confirmed that plans were at an advanced stage to ensure that Kenyans in the diaspora vote as directed by President. The constitution allows Kenyans living in the diaspora to vote.
Majority of Kenyans abroad did not vote during the 2013 elections due to what the Commission referred to as logistical challenges.
The announcement therefore comes as great news one year before the planned 2017 elections.
This notwithstanding, the commission is faced with eminent exit following intense lobbying by the opposition and civil society groups.
Kenyans wait to see how this will affect the planned registration exercise.
